What was your favorite destination and why?Italy – I love Italy!! The food, the history, architecture, the culture, shopping, and the beautiful scenery. My adventure took me to Roma (Rome), Positano, Capri and Naples. We were in awe of the Vatican, Coloseum, the Trevi Fountain, and all the ancient ruins. We marveled at the magnificent works of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel….ahh ROMA!!! In Capri, we visited the infamous Blue Grotto and taking the chairlift in Anacapri up to the highest point on the island for spectacular views of the Bay of Naples. Our love for Positano continued by dancing the night away at Music on the Rocks, lounging on the beach, meeting wonderful people, eating great pasta, and hitching scooter rides. AWESOME!!!!

Where have you traveled Internationally? If you describe that location in a single word or phrase, what would it be?Although I have been to more than 30 countries, my sabbatical travels over the past 20 months have led me to amazing destinations. I have been to Italy, Greece, Spain, Egypt, Israel, Nicaragua, Mexico, Colombia, Panama, China, Japan, Russia, St. Thomas, St. Martin, Dominica, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Jamaica, Turkey, Costa Rica, Germany, Dominican Republic, and many other exciting locations.

In a word, each place has its own UNIQUENESS. To me, travel is about exploring and experiencing the character of each destination.

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?I did a mission trip to Recife, Brazil years ago. That trip opened my eyes to see that sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zone in order to help and positively impact the lives of others.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?Not really. I have encountered some interesting “characters”, but nothing harmful. For example, while on a train in Italy, a young man sat in our car and struck up a conversation with us. In spite of his limited English, he kept pushing me to input my phone number in his cell. I declined and tried to ignore him. He then pulled out a pair of handcuffs. We knew he wasn’t an “officer”. At that point, the train agent approached him for his ticket, which he didn’t have validated. Subsequently, the guy was detained and escorted off the train. Another traveler who witnessed the conversation translated what the guy intended to “do” with the handcuffs. All I can say is thank goodness for timely interruptions.

More recently, I narrowly escaped the earthquake in Japan. We were there the day the smaller earthquake hit Tokyo. Had we extended our plans like we initially wanted to, we would have been in the midst of the disaster. We flew back to the states just hours before the big one shook the area.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?I am a very picky eater…did I say PICKY?? Outside of meat patties, escargot, and falafel, I haven’t ventured out too much. Unless it is dessert!!

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?I try to enjoy each destination and make the most of the experience. Sometimes things don’t always go as planned, but I take it as an opportunity to experience and see something different.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?I love a mix of cruises, adventure, beach getaways, city stays, and relaxing trips.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best – Seeing the beauty of God’s creation & savoring experiences.
• Worst – Unpacking my suitcase. Asking others to take a picture of me.

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas and see how the natives live?I mix it up a bit with the familiar and adventure.

Do you look for Americans when you travel? Also, do you try to ‘blend in’ or don’t think about it.I just go and really don’t think about it.

Do you have any travel tips to share?Plan and go! Life is too short to NOT do what you want to do. Life is also bigger than your neighborhood.

What was your favorite destination and why?Vietnam – I was really excited about going there for a lot of different reasons. The 1st one was that my grandma’s sister lived there for 7 years. I have always looked up on her and believe that I have got my sense of adventure partly from her.

What made me laugh in Vietnam is that people stare at you when you are a foreigner. Nothing in this was bad, they were just curious I guess! And everybody smiles at you! We went to a Buddhist Temple to celebrate the Vietnamese New Year. There were these 2 little 8 year old boys who lived in the temple that followed making fun of us as we walked around! They probably thought they were discreet, but I could see them hiding each time I was looking toward them! Kids! They were making fun of our Non-Vietnamese faces! Our entire group was French but from very diverse backgrounds including Vietnamese, Algerian, Moroccan and Caribbean. So I guess that we were very interesting for those two little cheeky boys! When we left the village on our bikes, the neighbors applaud us, I have no idea why but I felt like an international popstar! Lol!

And the last but not least point is the driving! This is something in Vietnam! One must not be afraid! I would be terrified of riding a bike in the West but in Vietnam I do believe that they are used to driving in such a mess that makes them better drivers! You have to be a skilled driver to learn to avoid people! Crossing a street there is also a skill to have! The best way is to go blind! If you hesitate you will NEVER cross, and people will avoid you anyway so it will be fine!

I really enjoyed my trip into Vietnam – it was my first time traveling to an Asian country. From what I have been told, is less touristy than other South East Asia countries.

Where have you traveled Internationally? If you describe that location in a single word or phrase, what would it be?

• Martinique, Caribbean – FAMILY TIME: My 1st time on a plane at two and a half years old! We went to visit my mother’s family who is from the island.
• Guadeloupe, Caribbean – FAMILY TIME: We had some family relatives on this island.
• Dakar, Senegal – FASCINATING: My father’s family is from Senegal. I went there when I was 6 years old. I actually celebrated my birthday there! It was a really different experience from the “western” birthdays celebration!
• Marie- Galante, Caribbean – CHARMING.
• Sousse, Tunisia – ENCHANTING: That was my 1st and only time in North Africa. I just loved it and felt at home!
• Lloret del Mar, Spain – PARTY: That is a cheap holiday spot for young people in Europe. I have to admit that I have not done a lot of cultural activities, I partied a lot instead!
• Nha Trang, Vietnam – EXCITING: That was my 1st time in Asia, so I was pretty excited! Also, the sister of my grandmother lived there for 7 years! So it was like following her on her adventure!
• Miami, US – SUNNY: The sunshine there was incredible! I just loved the light there.
• New York, US – AMAZING: I got a summer job in a youth hostel to improve my English. The whole team came to improve their English as well. That was my 1st real international experience. My colleagues were from the US, Israel, Nigeria, England and France.
• Houston, US – BIG: That was just for work, and I have to admit that it is the only place I have visited that I really didn’t like!
• New Orleans, US – CHARACTER: The food, the people, the music, and the architecture were fantastic. And being a French Creole, I could relate to a lot of these aspects of New Orleans as well. I could even understand some “Cajun”!!!!
• The North Sea – UNDESCRIPTIBLE: Working as an engineer on oil rigs, I love taking the helicopter to go offshore. It’s an interesting challenge as a female adapting to an all male environment – but that could be another article!

What are the Top 3 destinations on your Bucket List?

This is so hard to choose!!! I would go to the “Moon” if I could! Seriously, if I could I would take a trip to outer space!

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?Coming from a multicultural background, I do not think traveling has changed me in this sense. Also, I always make a point of not forming an opinion before visiting a country. The Media and other people’s experiences are only small “points” of a country’s description, so I try to keep an open mind when I travel to other countries to ensure my ideas are based on my own experiences. And even after a trip I rarely get a strong point of view. I know that I have just spent a holiday and not a lifetime in a foreign country. Plus when you do not speak the language that is an even bigger barrier.

I would say that the only thing I feel that had changed is my view of my home country, France. I tend to compare. But again I am always open to other ideas and point of views. I believe that this is how you learn about others, by being exposed.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?I have been lucky enough so far, so I haven’t had any bad experiences.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?I would not qualify my experience about eating in Senegal as “strange”. It was the first time that I was sharing a plate with the rest of the family, and using my hands to eat. Actually I liked it! I was only 6 years old, so eating without a fork and a knife is a child’s dream!

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?I apologize to the people of Houston, but I really didn’t enjoy my time there! I am just talking about the city though, not the people. I enjoy walking and the way the city is laid out – it is very difficult to walk, so I couldn’t. I understand that this is hot, humid and big, but I still like to have the choice! And I did not like the architecture as well. It is very important for me to see either nice buildings or nice landscape, I did not see any of that in Houston.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?I am the type of person who enjoys everything I have the occasion to do. I have been in luxury hotels, I loved it, I also enjoy backpacking. All for different reasons. I would say that luxury hotels are very comfortable, but I tend to meet more people and ending up doing more things when I backpack.
But if I have to be logical, I would rather go on adventure trips while I am still young and fit! Actually one of my dreams is to go to the rainforest in South America to walk and canoe the Amazon river.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best – Three things come to mind;
  • See the things that you have just seen on TV or in books – which was like every two minutes in NY!
  • Meet local people and travelers who are also open minded.
  • The entire preparation of the trip, the excitement and the travel to the destination itself! I would actually say that nowadays we tend to just go from A to B, without enjoying the travel itself. I have once read about a lady who went from France to New York by boat, about 10 years ago. She chooses the boat over a rapid flight because she wanted to have the same feeling that the immigrants who would leave their country and arrive in the US full of hope. She thought that to fully enjoy New York, she had to deserve it after a long trip. I found this idea very poetic!
• Worst – Having to pay for it! Also, the trips never seem long enough!

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (French food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas and see how the natives live?I do not want to do anything that is familiar to my culture(s). I tend to do the touristic bits because you have to! But I mostly try to get out of the tourist path and see how the natives live. Of course I know that I will only see a small part of their lives, as sometimes I do not speak the language or I do not stay long enough to fully experience all of the cultures.

Do you look for French citizens when you travel? Also, do you try to ‘blend in’ or don’t think about it.I usually don’t. But if I meet a cool French travel buddy, then I would hang out with her/ him.
I don’t think about blending in, as I am pretty aware that I am spotted as a tourist!

Do you have any travel tips to share?I do not know how it works for the US, but I have found out that usually it costs less to organize my trip on my own, rather than to use an agency. The first reason is that I feel that I am already gone a little! And also, I have seen that when you take holidays packages you end up being with your fellow country people in the same hotel! I do not want to be far away from home to only hear French around me!

What was your favorite destination and why?South Africa – My trips are usually very short given my limited vacation days, but I was able to squeeze 6 weeks in South Africa. The trip was a blend of business (an independent research project on engineering education) and pleasure. I travelled from Johannesburg to Durban and along the eastern coast to Cape Town via the Garden Route and visited Bisho, Umtata, Tsitsikamma and so more meeting wonderful people and sampling great cuisine along the way.

Of all of the locations I visited, Durban was by far my favorite. My nearly two weeks living on a flat on the beach were complete bliss! I spent time with the cast of African Footprints and experienced the coolest blend of African and Indian culture as I explored every inch of the city. Durban is definitely a place I would love to call home one day.

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?Every trip I take continues to open my eyes and broaden my horizons. I have come to appreciate all of the little things that we so often take for granted and appreciate and celebrate our similarities and differences in a totally different way.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?I’ve never had any major problems while travelling. My travel partner in the Dominican Republic was held a knife point after getting into an altercation over $10 USD. I wasn’t there when it happened, but it was a frightening experience nonetheless.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?I can’t really think of anything strange really. I grew up in the south and we just about anything imaginable, so nothing, so far has really been strange yet.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?I generally have great overall travel experiences overall, but one not so fun experience was my last trip to Jamaica for Reggae Sumfest. We made an impromptu over night trip to Negril to watch the sunset and it stormed the entire afternoon and night. As we were checking out the next morning to head back to Montego Bay, I slipped and fell down the stairs and twisted my ankle. I spent the next 3 days wrapped in ace bandages and applying ice, aloe and whatever else my friends thought would make it better. The whole situtaion kinda put me in a crappy mood for a bit, but I was not letting that deter me from seeing Usher, Buju Banton and rest of the line up at Sumfest. I got dressed in my one shoe and sock and headed out for the last night of concerts. Because of all of the rain the grounds were a complete mud puddle. I hobbled, hopped, limped and sloshed my way through the muddy parking lot to our seats. Though I spent most of the concert sitting down with my foot propped up and was COVERED in mud from the knees down, I still had a blast. We had great VIP seats, great food and the concert was amazing! I even got a quick conversation and photo with Christopher Martin before arriving back at my housing to hose off and get some rest!

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?It really depends on what’s going on and why I decided on the vacation in the first place. If things are stressful at work, I’m definitely looking to hit a beach and relax. If I’m travelling with my best friend, it’s definitely a more luxurious getaway with some shopping and relaxing. If I’m travelling solo, I’m looking for an adventure, to explore nature and historical sites. No matter what my motive I’m always looking to meet new people and have a life changing experience.

• Best – Everyday is a new adventure!
• Worst – Packing and having to leave to return home too soon!

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?Well I went to summer school after my first year in law school at the University of Aberdeen. I remember how intense the airport was in Scotland with armed police officers with huge guns and we had to go through “pat downs” and I remember saying “I can’t wait to get back to MY country we would never be treated like this!” A year later 9/11 happened and well travel in the US reminds me of that experience. Never say never.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?No I have been fortunate. When in Paris my girlfriends stayed in a different hotel and had a man break into their hotel room at night while they were sleeping but he didn’t get anything and they scared him off!

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?While in Edinburgh, Scotland they served us Haggis it is made from sheep’s stuff like their windpipe, lungs, heart and liver of the sheep are boiled and then minced. Then this mixture is placed inside the sheep’s stomach lining, which is sewn closed the boiled. Yeah I know. It actually wasn’t bad though.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?Getting back and forth from Trinidad to Tobago. You can take a huge cargo ship in the morning very pretty but it is very rough because you are crossing two different oceans. A lot of people get very very sick from the choppy water. Then flight only take 30 minutes and is about $30 US dollars well worth it but trying to go back the flights are always sold out so you have to pay someone to slip you on or you wait forever. Tobago is totally worth the hassle though!

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?I like to mix it up. Some of my travels are for work (like South Dakota) so that was mainly sightseeing (The Crazy Horse Memorial is Amazing and Mt. Rushmore), while others are for my sorority’s business or leadership meetings so going to The Atlantis in the Bahamas, St. Louis, MO or Anchorage, Alaska in July is a treat because I get a lot of shopping and sightseeing in as well as taking care of sorority business!

Other times I need a nice getaway closer to home. To get some culture in I may do a weekend trip to New York City for a Broadway Show (I saw Denzel Washington & Viola Davis in Fences this summer) or just a day trip to do High Tea at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and an afternoon at the museum (last time I went with a friend to High Tea, then to see Madeline Albright’s Read My Pins collection and enjoyed Central Park in the fall and topped it off with my Christmas list to Santa at Macy’s on 34th St its electronic now!). Other times when I can really getaway I catch a flight to Sedona, AZ. I love Sedona it’s amazing! It’s excellent for some great hiking around Bell Rock and papering at the spa! My goal is to visit all 50 states by the time I am 50 years old! I have 10 more on the list and I am just 35 so I can pace myself! Not likely lol Arkansas in January for my sorority’s Founders Day in little Rock. 9 more to go!

• Best – Seeing, tasting, feeling, and experiencing something new.
• Worst – Paying for it!

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas and see how the natives live?It depends on where I am. I tend to be a cautious person but every now and again I’ll do something out of character. In London I went off the beaten path to Brixton for the fun of it. But I am not too keen on doing that in the Islands unless I am with my family. In terms of food & activities I’ll at least try some new things and most times they are great like Shark & Bake in Trinidad! Who know shark could taste so good?!

Do you look for Americans when you travel? Also, do you try to ‘blend in’ or don’t think about it.I don’t tend to look for other Americans when I travel nor do I blend in so I guess I don’t think about it!

Do you have any travel tips to share?Don’t be afraid to travel alone! I wanted to go to Trinidad & Tobago for Carnival this year and the flight I was taking allowed me to lay over in Panama for the night, my girlfriend was going to come with me but she took too long to book the flight so the ticket price doubled and I had to go it alone and it was fantastic! I was a nuisance asking people to take my pictures all the time but people indulged me anyhow lol

I lost about 87 pounds over the last 16 months and just finished my first Iron Girl Triathlon in August! In the past nine months I have traveled seven times! And the year isn’t over yet! So keeping up with my workouts was important to me while I was on the road. Maintaining healthier habits while traveling can be a challenge but traveling is what I love to do so I had to make it work. So if you are embarking on, in the midst of, or thinking about a healthier lifestyle, do your best to stick to your workout routine! I tend to pick hotels with a gym and always leave room for workout clothing in my luggage!

What was your favorite destination and why?The African Continent – Traveling has been a passion of mine since I was a child. My parents introduced me to the wonders of the United States by taking me to many of the National Parks, so I could see the beauty of nature. Over the years, I have been to 38 countries on six continents and experienced a wide array of nature’s wonders, cultures, and languages.

Of all of the places I’ve visited, I found Africa to be the most interesting. Africa, with its 53 countries and many cultures, is perhaps the most varied in the world. In addition, seeing so many animal species in their natural setting is thrilling. To me, no zoo or documentary can prepare you for the vastness of the terrain, the sheer number of animals, and their natural behavior. In Tanzania, we saw a cheetah run down and catch a Thompson gazelle, then eat it in front of us. The cheetah was totally obvious to our presence. It was more concerned about hyenas.

Where have you traveled Internationally? If you describe that location in a single word or phrase, what would it be?

• Australia – Friendly people and beautiful scenery.
• Iguassu Falls, Brazil – Largest and most impressive falls in the world.
• Xi’an, China – Amazing terracotta warriors.

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?During my travels, I have encountered many diverse cultures. Most of my life I thought that these various cultures are what divide us. The more I travel the more that I have come to believe culture can be a mask hiding that people are more alike than they appear. I have found that people around the world have the same needs and desires as we do but often express them in different ways. They all want to survive, have enough food to eat, provide for their families, and love.

One place where I saw this idea in an extreme was in South Africa. Whether you had a chance at a good life there depended largely on the color of your skin. South Africa is perhaps the most culturally diverse country in the world, with eleven official languages. With its history of apartheid, people in South Africa have expressed some of the worst behaviors toward each other that we have seen in modern times. Between genocide of the original people by the Afrikaners, the extreme brutality toward the blacks who migrated to South Africa to work in the mines, political repression of minorities, and murders of innocent people, some could dub South Africa as a Hell on Earth. Unlike, other horribly repressive nations, South Africa experienced an awakening after the long, bloody struggle to end apartheid. With the reconciliation tribunals and the new progressive constitution, South Africa has shown how change can happen anywhere. Visiting there changed how I looked at the world and the possibilities for peace everywhere. I will never forget the people on the streets of Soweto who graciously welcomed us to their town, in spite of the history of hate and discrimination shown toward them by whites. It taught me a valuable lesson of forgiveness.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?Considering how much I have traveled, I have experienced few problems other than delayed flights and occasional problems with visas. I guess I have been very lucky.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?Crocodile (tastes like chicken) and ostrich in Zimbabwe and transparent baby shrimp in China.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?Years ago, I went to Wales for a conference and spent five days afterwards touring the country before driving back to London for my flight home. It rained the entire time I was in Wales. I drove for days in pelting rain and got out of the car only to eat and sleep. I saw almost none of the country.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?Over the years, I’ve enjoy all types of vacations, exploring different cultures and scenery. Now, I spend more time on adventure travel, going to places that most other people would not think of visiting.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best – Seeing new and exotic destinations.
• Worst – Sitting on long flights and waiting for connections.

Do you have any travel tips to share?Be patient with local situations. As a guest in another country, respect their customs. Americans can be spotted a mile away. They are the impatient ones who appear in a big hurry to go nowhere. Pack light and never check bags. I can go for weeks with only carryons.

Any parting shots or Shout outs?You can’t appreciate our way of life in the US without going to places where the people have nothing and struggle every day to survive, often in politically repressive countries.

What was your favorite destination and why?Sydney, Australia – I’m tempted to say Paris, France, but my heart belongs to Sydney, Australia. It was my first solo international jaunt, and I loved that feeling of independence, of exploring a foreign country on my own, meeting new friends and embracing a spirit of adventure. I called my trip Down Under the “Face Your Fears” tour, because I conquered several of them along the way – fear of flying, fear of heights, fear of the unknown. I gave myself permission to try new things each day – activities that would traditionally be considered “Stuff White People Do” – such as skydiving , surfing, going on a Harley motorcycle tour. As a single woman traveler, people approach you in a different way, with a sense of respect and awe.

Where have you traveled Internationally? If you describe that location in a single word or phrase, what would it be?

• Sydney, Australia – A jewel of a city
• Barcelona, Spain – Gaudi, Gaudi, Gaudi!
• Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Red Light District, anyone?

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?Initially, I had reservations about Australia as a destination. I have not been to the Motherland yet, and I felt like a sell out for choosing to vacation in a country where 90 percent of the inhabitants are of European descent and that has a history of marginalizing its indigenous population. But as I was making my travel plans, I realized that I was in the midst of a spiritual and emotional crisis, so I had to put my nationalism on hold. I just wanted to get as far away from my life as possible, so I found myself on the opposite end of the earth.

Once I got there, I didn’t want to view my trip through the lens of a black American tourist a few valium shy of a breakdown. I felt fully engaged with the culture – indigenous and otherwise. An Aborigine named Sonny taught me how to throw a boomerang and he told me about his tribe, about the meaning of their flag, his experiences as a black fella. I went pub hopping with an elderly British man, whom I later learned had an Aborigine grandmother. Even though I was often the only sister within a thirty-mile radius, I didn’t feel like an outsider. Sure, some people stared, but for the most part, I felt as if I belonged in the land of koalas and kangaroos. I think the trip was my rite of passage as a citizen of the world.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?Yes, when traveling … by surfboard! I took a two-hour lesson on Manly Beach in Australia, and although I loved the experience, I must have swallowed about a gallon of salt water. When I returned to my hotel room, I had a headache, sore throat and flu-like symptoms, which lasted for two days. As I was traveling on my own, it was scary to fall ill in a foreign country. Nevertheless, being sick didn’t stop me from going on a wine-tasting tour in the Hunter Valley region the next day!

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?I tried monkfish for the first time in Barcelona and fried octopus at a seafood restaurant in Sydney. I sucked on a cannabis lollipop in Amsterdam. Does that count?

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?Outside of getting sick in Oz, I don’t think I have a least favorite experience. Every city or country that I set foot in contributes to my growth as a writer, as a woman and as a student of the world.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?My ideal vacation is a combination of adventure and relaxation. I don’t just do touristy things; I like to explore off-the-beaten-path places. In Paris, I wanted to follow in the footsteps of ex-pat black writers like James Baldwin and Richard Wright. I wanted to see the city through their eyes, sip café viennois and people watch. I also try not to cram my days full of excursions, so I can have down time just to journal and reflect on the trip.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best – Your quote from Mark Twain sums it up: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” It takes all kinds of folks to make the world go round, and our lives are enriched by learning new languages, trying different foods, checking out centuries-old architecture. Your perception is altered when you meet people face to face rather than researching them on Google.

  Before I ever traveled outside the United States, I wrote a short story “Finger of God” based on a rock formation at Montserrat Mountain in Catalonia, Spain. When I finally stood atop that mountain a few years later, I realized that I was so off base with my online research. Nothing could compare to actually being there, inhaling the scent of rosemary and pine, staring at the River Llobregat below. It was like a spiritual awakening.

• Worst – The airport experience! My anxiety builds just thinking about getting through customs, losing luggage. I try to minimize this by packing light.

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas and see how the natives live?I think it’s a combination of both. I’m not going to lie; when I couldn’t stomach another bland Parisian dish, I ate pizza three days in a row at the pizza joint down the street from my hotel. But when abroad, I prefer a splash of local color. I’m not a beer drinker, but I took a pub tour in Sydney to learn about the city’s early history and to mingle with the locals. I’m a bit of an introvert, but I force myself out of my comfort zone to talk to strangers in restaurants, on the metro, in a club.

Do you look for Americans when you travel? Also, do you try to ‘blend in’ or don’t think about it.It’s comforting to spot other black Americans abroad, particularly black women, not only for the cultural solidarity, but also to know that people of color are seeing more of the world. As a sister with natural hair, it’s kind of hard to “blend in” internationally, so I don’t attempt to hide my shine. In Sydney, I tried to familiarize myself with the city as quickly as possible. Then I would throw on my iPod and walk the streets and catch the ferry as if I had been doing it for years. The highest compliment I was paid Down Under was when the man sitting next to me at a restaurant said, “You don’t sound like you’re from America; you sound like an Australian.” G’day mate!

I do regret visiting Paris and Spain and not learning the language beforehand. To me, that’s an Ugly American trait of thinking the world must accommodate our lack of culture. The next non-English-speaking country I visit, I will be sure to learn as many phrases as possible.

Do you have any travel tips to share?All the single ladies, don’t be afraid to get your solo travel on! Don’t fear the far. Exotic locales await you, as well as a sense of independence and adventure. If you are traveling on your own, make sure to leave a copy of your itinerary with a loved one as well as a copy of your passport. Be aware of the country’s requirements for entry, because sometimes you’ll need more than a passport. I had to apply for a visa to enter Australia, but l was able to do it online in less than fifteen minutes. But most of all, open your mind to different experiences. And don’t worry about your hair!

Traveling to faraway lands is a big fear for many women. As a recovering dysfunctional diva, let me leave you with this advice: if I can sit on a plane for fifteen hours, travel 7,300 miles from home, and lose (and find) myself in another culture without the aid of antidepressants, anyone can!

What was your favorite destination and why?Las Vegas – I tend to fall a little in love with every place I visit, but I’d have to say my greatest love is Las Vegas, because you get so much bang for your buck when compared to hotels in other cities. Plus it’s an adult playground. When I go there, it’s really an escape from my everyday life. The variety of things to do there means I never get bored, and because the city is constantly evolving and changing, there are always new things to see and do when I go. I visit once a year. I’ve been there so many times it requires little effort on my part to research or plan my trip compared to other destinations.

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?Before I went to England, I was a bit of an Anglophile. I had a reverse prejudice in that I thought everything English was superior to anything American. That trip helped me to realize that England is not perfect, and that the US does some things much better. It taught me an appreciation of my home country.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?Thankfully, no. The closest I came was when I got "Longhauled" (when a taxi driver purposefully drives a longer route to a destination in order to increase the fare) on my last trip to Vegas. I knew I had been longhauled and I made no secret of the fact I knew it, and instead of dropping me off at the Flamingo valet, my cab driver dropped me off at the tour lobby entrance, which is basically in a dark alley. (I am sure he did this to avoid having me report him to the valet.) I had a choice: I could stay in the cab and insist he bring me to the valet, or just pay him and go ahead inside. I chose not to fight him on it, because I didn’t want to start my vacation with an altercation, but in retrospect, I should have used my cell phone to call the Taxicab Authority and report him.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?When I was in Germany, I tried frogs legs (I know, wrong country for it, but that’s where I was). Yes, it tastes like chicken, but I probably wouldn’t eat it again, just because I know it’s the legs of a frog. Yuck.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?Sadly, my trip to Mexico for so many reasons. I was with my boyfriend at the time. He and I had very different travel styles. Plus he was blatantly flirting with another woman at the resort. I also found it very disturbing that all the luxury resorts had gates and armed guards and if you went outside them and saw how people actually lived, there was an extreme poverty there. It made me uncomfortable to be participating in that kind of conspicuous consumption in the face of such need. And to top it all off, I got food poisoning, which cut short my trip to see the ruins at Tulum which was the one thing I most wanted to do in Mexico. Someday, I’ll give Mexico another chance, but I need to wait for the negative association to fade.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?I like my vacations to be diverse in terms of activities. I like some down time, but mostly, I like to keep active with a variety of things to do, mostly sightseeing, since I’m an avid photographer. Since I live in a pretty rural state, I prefer going to cities and well-populated places for vacation. I do love luxury getaways when I can afford them, which isn’t very often.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best – Seeing new places, having new experiences, meeting new people. I think it’s really important for us to see that not everyone lives the way we do, that not everyone thinks the way we do.
• Worst – Not being able to do it more often..

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas and see how the natives live?A mix of both, depending on where I was. In Germany and Austria , I stayed with relatives who lived there, so I saw how the locals lived, though of course we also did some sightseeing. I didn’t spend much or any time with locals in England or Mexico. I have friends who live in Montreal, so when I go up I spend some time with them in their neighborhood. I definitely try to eat the local cuisine as much as possible – that’s one of the joys of traveling! I think it defeats the point of traveling to just stick with American food and familiar chains, like the ubiquitous Hard Rock Cafes or McDonalds.

Do you look for Americans when you travel? Also, do you try to ‘blend in’ or don’t think about it.Certainly, I try to blend in to the degree that I don’t want to attract too much attention to myself (and either fly under the radar of thieves or convince them I’m not the easiest target in town), but I don’t try to pretend I’m anything but American (because the locals would probably see through any such attempt anyway). I look for anyone who is friendly who speaks at least some English so I can communicate with them. I don’t care where they’re from.

Do you have any travel tips to share?Yes, don’t be afraid to travel alone. If there’s a place you want to see, go see it, whether or not you have someone to go with. Life is too short not to!

What was your favorite destination and why?Istanbul, Turkey – I love the people. They treated my family and I so well. I love the Turkish kitchen (that means cuisine). I learned and experienced Biblical history. My middle daughter was born in there. It was such a spiritual and mystical experience.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?I experienced loneliness living in other countries sometimes when my ex-husband traveled on the road to basketball games.

Do you have any travel tips to share?I suggest reading or learning something about the people, language and culture before you go. You get what you expect, so expect a positive experience. Be humble. The American way of life is not necessarily the best way to live.

What was your favorite destination and why?I have traveled and lived in various places in America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe and North Africa – so I actually don’t have a favorite destination. I have enjoyed visiting different places for different reasons.

I would say, though, that the most intriguing places were Cartagena, Columbia, Marrakesh, Morocco, Aswan and Cairo, Egypt and Israel. I did fall in love with the South of France many years ago, which is why we decided to move here from New York City, but I wouldn’t consider it a favorite destination, just a perfect crossroads and location from which to travel to fun foreign locales.

Where have you traveled Internationally? If you could describe each location in a single word or phrase, what would it be?

• Geneva, Switzerland – Not what it’s cracked up to be.
• Porte Au Prince, Haiti – Exotic, great art, and friendly, proud people.
• Egypt – Can’t get a handle on what’s been achieved since the time of the Pharaohs.
• Monaco – Glitzy, fun, safe, spectacular urban vistas.

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?Not really, I’ve always been rather adaptable to different environments.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?It’s amazing, but aside from the standard flight delays, I have only one experience that was problematic: my boarding pass was stolen on my way to Rome from Nice, France. Can’t imagine why, since when I look back on it, I was the only person who looked like me on that flight.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?Ironically it was on our own territory…Puerto Rico. Asopao riñon…Kidney Soup. Don’t ask.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?Aside from the magnificent antiquities, the 14-day Nile Cruise we look in 2005 was the most stressful experience I have ever had in my life (okay…perhaps I’m spoiled). The accommodations were fine, the food on the odd riverboat was abundant and pleasantly Mediterranean, but it was a forced march, starting at 5:00am from one ancient site to another, which actually rendered the whole trip into a blurred expedition through piles of rock and beggars. Advice: Take a shorter cruise than I did.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?I enjoy renting apartments in major cities: ie: Paris, Madrid, London, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and exploring as a resident. In more exotic locales I prefer luxury getaways with access to tour guides to visit places of interest.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best – Traveling gives one an opportunity to experience other cultures and broaden ones perspective on the human condition.
• Worst – The possibility of sudden political unrest.

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas and see how the natives live?I prefer the foreign experience. What’s the point of spending so much money and time on foreign travel only to seek out American things? Finding a way to interact the locals enhances a travel adventure, and shows you that things are not always what they appear to be on the surface.

Do you look for Americans when you travel? Also, do you try to ‘blend in’ or don’t think about it.I don’t exactly run away from Americans, nor do I seek them out. As a black American I find it would be impossible to "blend in" anywhere in the world, even in Africa. The French say that one should try and "integrate" into a society, not "assimilate". Integrate, to me, means getting along, respecting the local culture and people, not being condescening or making assumptions, understanding the limits of your knowledge and respecting the wisdom of the locals. Trying to "assimilate" or pass for something you’re not, only makes you a second rate copy of the real thing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a foreign traveler.

Do you have any travel tips to share?Research the country you plan to visit. Carry a phrase book, people are generally more helpful when you try to communicate in their language, and then often you find that some will want to practice their English with you. Take precautions in what you consume, and plan an itinerary.

What was your favorite destination and why?Brazil – specifically, São Paulo. The country is bursting with a palpable culture most black American travelers can relate to. The friendliness (and occasional nosiness) of the people is very much akin to the old school Southern-style sense of community, even in a mega-city like São Paulo (a dirty, crowded, overbearing, wild, sophisticated, and surprising place that is very much underrated). Of course, there’s the oft-discussed sex, which is good and abundant, but not in a debased, dirty kind of way. Brazilians own their sexuality in a way most other societies don’t, and they engage in what feels good to them. It’s quite liberating.

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?I remember in Cuba once being judgmental about this prostitute I met. I was thinking, “have pride in yourself…you don’t have to sell your body.” But then I realized, who am I to tell someone not to sell their body when I’m not offering a viable alternative, such as a job? You never know people’s circumstances and motivations.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?Once, in Rio de Janeiro, I was walking home from the gym with a Brazilian friend and while we were talking, a kid of maybe 9 or 10 came up to me and started talking in Portuguese. I told him, in Spanish, that I couldn’t help him and he grabbed my wrist. I, in typical American fashion, yanked my arm back and told him not to touch me (or as we say in Florida, bag back!). He started yelling at me in Portuguese and I yelled back in Spanish, then turned to make my way home. He came up and kicked me in the butt, then ran back across the street.

Things escalated from there, with him throwing a rock at my foot and my friend pulling me away from the scene because Lil Man was about to get the whippin his daddy clearly wasn’t giving him. Meanwhile, my friend kept commenting how kids these days don’t even seem to fear two over-six-foot-tall men anymore. When we got back to the house, my anger had turned to anxiety because I was lucky the kid only picked up a rock as opposed to pulling out a knife or gun. And it didn’t matter that I understand all the socio-economic backstory behind this young, black street kid; I was identified as foreign and subsequently as an easy mark. That ended my short-lived love affair with Rio.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?Escargot, and that was only a tiny bit and I don’t even remember what it tasted like.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?My least favorite travel experience would be making a flight connection between Cuba and the States in Nassau, Bahamas. After arriving on Cubana, we were scheduled to make a 45 minute hop over to Miami on a US airline. Four hours later, we were still sitting at the Nassau airport with no information about when our flight would depart or even when the plane would arrive to pick us up; meanwhile, several other flights to Miami on that same airline left on-time. The flight status system also reported our flight as having departed and arrived on schedule, which was a complete fabrication. The airport agents were rude and laughed at our situation (they better be glad we preferred to spend the night in the Nassau airport and not the Nassau jail for assault and battery).

By 8pm, the airport’s sole restaurant closed and we were left to fend for ourselves while the airline offered non-information about the flight. We finally arrived in Miami at almost midnight (scheduled arrival time, 7pm), and were offered zero compensation as Miami was our final destination; I have no idea what happened to a family of six that missed their connection to Los Angeles. I wrote a strongly-worded letter to the airline complaining about the delay and the behavior of their ground staff and they wrote back saying they had no record of the flight ever being delayed. Lesson: in the event of a severe flight delay, save all receipts and exchange contact information with the other passengers.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?While I do enjoy short beach getaways, I’m mostly into extended stays in big cities. I’m a fan of museums and exhibitions, love spectator sports and all kinds of musical performances (from opera to OutKast), and I definitely like to do my thing on the dance floor, and you can get it all in the city. Whenever I can, I like to spend at least a week in one place to get to know the people and the neighborhoods, especially around where I’m staying. I like going to certain places to eat more than once and have the wait staff remember me. After a few days in one place, you start to see people’s daily routines, and that gives you more insight into the place than a quick three night city stay at a chain hotel.

• Best – Meeting people
• Worst – Not being paid to do it (yet)

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas an see how the natives live?It depends on the destination. I try to see how people live in a place on a normal day-to-day basis outside of the tourist track, but in Paris, I mean, how can you not go to the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre? And I did often eat at McDonald’s there, but only because I was on a crazy-tight budget and they had 50-cent cheeseburgers.

Do you look for Americans when you travel? Also, do you try to ‘blend in’ or don’t think about it. I’m a definite blender. I try to travel under-the-radar as much as possible, as it tends to show me a little more about how people truly interact in a society. My only experiences with racism abroad have been when people thought I was local. On the down side, I’ve missed the opportunity to take many amazing photographs for fear that I’d be ID’d as a tourist. Generally, I try to avoid other Americans and usually only make contact if I notice they seem lost or in need of assistance. I’ve met some very good American friends abroad, but I travel specifically to interact with other cultures.

What was your favorite destination and why?Paris and Mali I became an adult in Paris, France. When I lived there, it was my first time being on my own, working and living in my own apartment. I went through a lot to become accustomed to the culture of French people. But in the end I wrote a book out of it!

Mali, West Africa is a very close second. I spent nearly three weeks in this country in 2002. During that time, I kicked it in Bamako (the dusty African capital known for great live music) and chilled in Mopti (a town made entirely of MUD). Then I sailed up the Niger river on a Peniche, stopping in little villages on the way. We sailed all the way to Timbuktu (yes I have really been to Timbuktu). Though Timbuktu is no longer the center of education and civilization (as it was in the 13th century) I found the people to be so wise and smart.

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?My study abroad in Munich, Germany 9 years ago might have had the most impact on me. I had been studying German for seven years, but I was bummed to be studying in Germany – I wanted to go to Paris! Turns out I met the coolest people in Germany and we ended up traveling all around the country visiting Hip-Hop, Reggae and African Festivals. My experience in Germany was truly an introduction to the world and made me realize that black people are EVERYWHERE!

In some ways it was the genesis of the Travel Guide to Black Paris. I won’t be doing a guide to Black Germany any time soon….but there are tons of us there!!

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?Yes I have, in Brazil actually. While I was in Salvador, Brazil I was using a public telephone at 3 in the morning in a not so safe place. Four guys jumped and tried to rob me, but in the end I didn’t get hurt. I’m sure I worried my mother to near death.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?I’ve never eaten any strange bugs or animals, but I’m always up for trying anything.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?The Bahamas. At the time that I visited the Bahamas, I was not a big beach person and I couldn’t swim so what’s the point of the Bahamas. It also just felt like an extension of the US. When I travel I LOVE a cultural adventure; I love it when I don’t speak the same language as the natives. I love seeing different architecture, whether it be a mud house or a Louis IV palace. You just don’t get that in the Bahamas.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?I like Adventure, Culture, and backpacking. I also like experiencing cities with great nightlife. I probably won’t be able to afford the shopping and luxury getaways until five years from now.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best – Meeting people from all over the world.
• Worst – Paying for it.

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas and see how the natives live?I try to always buy a travel guide to the destination I’m visiting. In addition, I try to find friends to live in or know someone who lives in the destination via Facebook/Twitter so I can obtain a great host. I don’t like to do tons of organized tours, I prefer to do things on my own so when I leave I will know how to navigate the city. I also try to stay at least 10 days at each location so I can really learn about the city.

Do you look for Americans when you travel? Also, do you try to ‘blend in’ or don’t think about it.Yes, I do look for Americans when I travel. I look for them because I figure since we are in the same destination, we will have some similar likes. But I also always try to connect with some locals before I get to a destination. This also depends on the destination. When traveling to Europe, I can always connect with friends or friends of friends. As for Mexico, I haven’t quite figured it out.

Do you have any travel tips to share?If you are going to a destination where you do not speak the language, take a class before you go. Your experience will be soo much better since you can communicate with people on a basic level. Always buy a guidebook for any destination that you travel to.

What was your favorite destination and why?Paris, France – of all the places I’ve been fortunate enough to visit, it’s the one place that woos me over and over again. I’ve been there countless times since 1998, and fell in love with it from Day One. I’m absolutely determined to live there someday. How much do I love Paris? If someone told me that I had to live ONE place for the rest of my life and could never leave its limits, I’d choose Paris without hesitation. It’s endlessly fascinating, and one lifetime wouldn’t be enough to discover it all.

Where have you traveled Internationally? I’ve visited nearly 30 countries and territories on four continents. Some of the MOST interesting have been Saudi Arabia (yes, I donned a burqa for this three-day business trip); Dubai (just because it felt like a Middle Eastern Las Vegas and a bit surreal); rural eastern Turkey (city of Kars and the Ani historic architectural site near the border of Armenia, where you’re transported back nearly 1,000 years) and Buenos Aires (one of the liveliest places I’ve ever been, and one that reminded me of many other European cities I’d visited before).

If you could describe your favorte destinations in a single word or phrase, how would you do it?Where have you traveled Internationally? 

• Barcelona, Spain – Trendy and energetic
• Buenos Aires, Argentina – ALIVE
• Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Fascinating
• Rome, Italy – Timeless
• Lisbon, Portugal – Woefully underrated travel destination.

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?I don’t think any one specific trip changed the way I think, but my collective travels have made me the open-minded (I hope) citizen of the world I TRY to be. Rather than always viewing other folks and their cultures through an American lens, I respect them from THEIR perspective. My Saudi Arabian host paid me one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received: He said I was a perfect “Bedouin,” or someone who knows how to seamlessly fit into another’s culture. And that’s my goal, wherever I visit. I’m not there to judge; I’m there as another country’s guest and want to experience life as it’s lived there, even when it’s 180 degrees different from my life in the States.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?I’ve been really fortunate in all my getting around. I’ve dealt with airport strikes in Rome (of course) and Metro slowdowns in Paris, but you have no choice but to be patient. On my first trip to Rome, my two girlfriends and I arrived at our hotel (after a three-hour delay at the airport because of a strike) and found our first night’s reservation was messed up. Thank GOODNESS I was also there for business, and two women at my company’s Rome office hooked us up with an incredible hotel—one that STILL holds great memories for us. Better yet, over the years these two Italian colleagues have become wonderful friends of mine and my family!

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?Hmmm… I’m a freelance food writer and can’t recall eating anything so strange it stands out. Which is surprising, because I’m quite an adventurous eater and will try MOST things (well, a lot of things) once.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?I can’t really say I’ve had a least favorite, only because I believe every experience is an adventure and has something to teach me—that is, if only I have sense enough to learn the lesson.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?I’m not into climbing mountains, but love “culture vacations” that let me live like a local in whatever place I’m visiting for that time. I want to have coffee where they do; I want to eat at family-owned hole-in-the-wall restaurants off small side streets that only local residents know about. I’m not big on shopping, but I love finding boutiques that aren’t overrun with tourists who read about them in a guidebook. Museums are fine, but I find you really get a sense of a culture and its people by walking—and by taking public transportation at rush hour.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best – The anticipation you feel at the airport before leaving on a trip. I know folks hate the TSA and the security hassles, but the whole airport experience energizes me—even when I’m flying coach (which I usually am!)!
• Worst – Coming home. I know I probably need some psychological analysis for this, but as much as I love my place in Chicago, I’d always rather be on the road and somewhere else.

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas and see how the natives live?I’m ALL about trying to have as “local” an experience as possible. I purposely avoid staying in American chain hotels (for safety against terrorism as much as wanting to experience that country’s culture), but rather look for small B&Bs that are owned (at least partially) by people FROM that country and speak its language. I stay away from restaurants that post menus in multiple languages—a sure sign they’re trying to woo tourists. And I love traveling alone, as I find that locals are more likely to approach you when you’re not sitting there giggling with a bunch of girlfriends. I’ve met great folks all over the world this way who have introduced me to slices of their culture that I’m SURE I would have otherwise missed.

Do you look for Americans when you travel? Also, do you try to ‘blend in’ or don’t think about it.I keep an eye out to see if I spot any Americans (unfortunately, I rarely see any African-Americans, which always disappoints me). In some places, I’ve found that tourists from the States are often far too loud, dressed far too casually for the culture they’re visiting, and demand things be “like they are at home.” I definitely think about the whole “blending in” thing. My goal is to look like a “daughter of the diaspora” so that until I open my mouth, I could be from the Caribbean, London, Paris, or anywhere in the world—not just from the United States. I don’t want to be typecast.

Do you have any travel tips to share?No matter how hard the language, learn at least the BASIC greetings. I’m always amazed at how far that’ll get you in any culture or country, as it shows you’re at least making an effort. Don’t worry about whether there will be any other black folks in the place you’re visiting. Just be your genuinely fascinating self and GO. And similarly, don’t be afraid of traveling solo. As I mentioned earlier, I’ve had incredible adventures and met great people I likely wouldn’t have encountered had I been traveling with a group. Keep your wits about you and have fun—but as my dad always admonishes me, “Don’t be over there doin’ nothin’ stupid.”

Any parting shots or Shout outs?As I wrote in a recent UrbanTravelGirl post, get out there and experience the world—and then let the world experience YOU in all your African-American fabulousness. Let people see beyond the Hollywood hype and stereotypes.

What was your favorite destination and why?The Grand Canyon – I’ve wanted to visit there my entire life and I can definitely say it was worth the wait. The energy out west is very peaceful to me and I loved the varied terrain on the drive to there from Scottsdale. And I look forward to returning again to make the hike down and back up again. From what I understand, Havaspu Falls is a must see!!

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?My travels keep me motivated to work when I’m home, so I can travel over and over again. I’m a tree hugger (not a political or social enthusiast) – so the desire to ensure our natural environment is maintained has crossed over into my daily activities – whether it be recycling or energy preservation.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?Yes. I was on a 28ft cruiser from Miami to the Bahamas and got sea sick & threw up on the way there and caught in a near Hurricane storm on the way back. 10ft waves up close in the driving rain is no joke. I was very, very scared!

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?Not necessarily strange— but most delicious— freshly made Conch Salad in Bimini, Bahamas.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?In general, I don’t like metropolitan areas much, so Manhattan was a very trying experience. Everyone drives like a bat outta hell – especially the cab drivers.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?My top choices always involve nature, hiking, oceans, waterfalls. A luxurious spa runs a very close second.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best – Getting away for a while to enjoy and expand ones horizons. Is there anything better?
• Worst – Flying, of course…

Do you have any travel tips to share?Taking the time to do the research will save you lots of money!! Trip Advisor is one of my favorite resources to find out about where a hotel is located. To me, it doesn’t matter how nice the hotel room is, if the property itself isn’t close to any attractions – it can be a difficult experience.

What was your favorite destination and why?Jamaica – I really liked the sand, beach atmosphere and the way people received us. Furthermore – Hedonism was the most shocking thing I’d seen to that point.  It was nasty and raunchy – but in a civilized and good way. People just having sex anywhere – lol!  Only singles and swingers need apply – this is definitely not a place for non-swinging couples.  As long as you understand what you are getting into – it can be a great time.

Where have you traveled Internationally and in a single word/phrase, how would you describe each destination?

• Negril, Jamaica – Hot, in more ways than one.
• Belize – Felt like home
• Cozumel, Mexico – A lot of fun!

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?Jamaica – it changed the way I think in terms of being comfortable with yourself.  Made me realize people from other countries are not as conservative as most Americans.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?Conch (cooked)

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?I can’t really say I had bad experiences on my trips, I’ve been extremely lucky. My worst experience was traveling back from Atlantic City. After a really good time, I ended up having double delays to my flight. On top of that, I was sick and my luggage was lost with all the brand new stuff I had purchased on my trip. To add insult to injury, my car keys were in the bag so I was stuck at the airport; so I had to leave my car at the airport, get a ride home, and pay for an extra day of parking. I was supposed to get home by 8 p.m but didn’t get in until 1 a.m. It was my worse experience ever and a horrible way to end an otherwise good trip.

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas an see how the natives live?I like to do both.  As it related to hotels, I prefer Americanized versions – no desire to sleep in a shack.  On the other hand, I will at least ‘try’ to eat what the locals eat – "when in Rome…". 

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?Adventure, I’m not into spas or camping.  I also really like partying and having a lot of fun.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best: Gaining new experiences
• Worst: I always seem to be tired when I get home.  Sorta need a vacation from from my vacation.

Do you look for Americans when you travel? Also, do you try to ‘blend in’ or don’t think about it.I pay attention, but it doesn’t alter my plans – I just get down with whomever is around.  I’m a people person. I enjoy speaking and interacting with non-American individuals whenever I travel.

Do you have any travel tips to share?Yes, don’t travel with people you don’t know very well.  The middle of your vacation is not the best time to find out there are personality conflicts and/or others don’t share your idea of the itinerary.  This can ruin a vacation.

Also, put together an itinerary but don’t make it so rigid that you can’t accommodate unforeseen circumstances (weather, better party, etc.)  Over planning can take all of the fun out of the vacation.

What was your favorite destination and why?Ireland – I just loved the entire country! Everyone was so friendly it made me feel at home. It’s hard to explain, but I did feel an ancestral connection to the place. I visited Dublin (capital and financial epicenter), Galway (port city on the western coast), Kilkenny (great castles) and Killarney (national parks and nightlife).

Alaska is a very close second.

Where have you traveled Internationally and in a single word/phrase, how would you describe each destination?

• Dublin, Ireland – Friendly
• Nice, France – Wine/bread/cheese-y
• Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Sexy. Except the leathery old men in speedos on the beach.
• Barcelona, Spain – Awesome/Scary. We were there for the Olympics in 92 and each bus entering the harbor (we were staying on a cruise ship) was searched with those scary machine guns and mirrors to check for suspicious packages under the bus.
• Nova Scotia, Canada – love the natural and rustic beauty of the Northeast

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?I re-affirmed my love of singing after doing so in Westminster Abbey.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?After 9-11, my husband was on the no-fly list due to his common name. This used to be a royal pain; the last time he was stopped (I think to Alaska), we were detained while a TSA guy came out from behind the curtain and asked him questions. It has recently gotten a little better after we filled out some TSA form designed to help folks with common names.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?I don’t choose to eat strange things, but Blood Sausage may qualify (sounds worse than it is).

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?Our flight to Hawaii was a bitch. Long, crowded flight and Hot!  I ate hot!  Hawaii itself was great. We took a plane tour of the island, saw the turtles, surfed, etc. but that damned heat!!!   The sights were wonderful, but buggy and hot.

Do you have any travel tips to share?Rolly bags are God’s way of saying “Please Travel”! What a great invention. Take off your shoes and put on warm sox for long flights.

What was your favorite destination and why?Paris – I love the history, the vibe, the food and the ease of getting around. In addition, Paris has a sizable population of expatriate African-Americans, including the descendants of soldiers, writers, artists ad musicians whose souls have been finding refuge here since early in the 20th century.

Where have you traveled Internationally?
I’ve been to over 15 countries – but these are a few of my favorites:

• Venice, Italy - Serenity floating on water.

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?Every trip changes me in some way, large or small. I take fewer things in my own life for granted. I’ve learned that the minor inconveniences in my life are exactly that. I’ve learned that as Americans, we don’t know everything, we don’t have all the answers — and I’m fine with that.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?I was pick pocketed in Mexico City. Escaped Bangkok just ahead of an airport strike. Briefly shared a London apartment with rats.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?Mofongo (Spanish dish generally made of fried plantains or yuca)

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?Spending 14 hours crammed into a stretched DC-8 airliner flying from Tokyo to LAX. If you never experienced flying on a DC-8, consider yourself blessed.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?At one time or another, any or all of those, as well as baseball trips with friends, focusing on minor-league ball in Latin America and around the world.

What’s the best thing about traveling?   What’s the Worst?

• Best – The best thing is not just seeing the sights, but making connections with people. That’s how you really start to learn about a place.
• Worst – Flying. It was bad before 9/11. Now, it’s hellish.

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas an see how the natives live?I try to get out of home mode, to the point that I no longer do group tours. I refuse to set foot in a Mickey D’s, which is increasingly difficult to do, since they seem to be everywhere except North Korea.

Do you look for Americans when you travel? Also, do you try to blend in or don’t think about it. I do look for Americans. When I see them, I try to head in the other direction. Nothing personal, but I didn’t endure 11 hours in Sardine Class to be with my countrymen.

Do you have any travel tips to share?Just one: Embrace the whole experience when you travel, good or bad. Roll with it, learn from it.

What was your favorite destination and why?Yosemite National Park – not only breathtaking spiritually, but it provides a sense of peace and calm I have not experienced elsewhere. Discovering the native people who lived there thousands of years prior to the current residents has an effect. The mountains, valleys and caverns – which took millions of years to create – are sublime.  Yosemite gives you a perspective of your place and impact in the world. Finally, you can enjoy Yosemite any time of year.

• Oaxaca, Mexico – Humbling
• Alberta/Niagara, Canada – Familiar, but far away

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?Having grown up traveling regionally and nationally, I’ve found that ‘people’ have greatest impact on your travel experiences – more so than the ‘destination’ itself.  I think traveling expands your world; your favorite restaurant could be across the globe.  That transforms your thinking in terms of certain political positions, the products you buy, etc.  An example would be New Orleans – a community I’m very close to.  Having visited the city numerous times prior to Katrina and shortly thereafter – it broke my heart to see how unfairly the people were treated during and after the storm.

Have you ever experienced a problem when traveling (passport, victim of crime, etc.)?One of the things that can be problematic is dealing with travel agencies.  Though not as bad as it used to be, you still have to be very careful when dealing with these entities.  Read the fine print!   I had a problem with a travel agent with ticketing for a flight.  Long story short, the airline wouldn’t accept what the agent provided and I had to spend extra money to purchase a new – and more expensive ticket – 1 hour prior to the flight. The moral of story is to keep and review your documentation – especially when traveling internationally.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?Champolines (Fried Grasshoppers) in Mexico

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?Car trip to Seattle from Bay Area.  Too many people for too long of a period – cramped into too small of a space is a recipe for disaster.  You have to use the right tools for the job.  If you have to drive more than 6-7 hours – get an RV/Trailer so people aren’t compartmentalized.  If its just me, then I’ll fly if the drive would be over 3-4 hours.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?Adventure, Backpacking, Art & Culture (Museums) and Beaches.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best – You get to be exposed to places and spaces you’ve never experienced.  Even if you’ve seen these places on TV – it’s not the same thing.  Again, its not just about the destination – its the interaction with the people that has the greatest effect.
• Worst – Sometimes the inconveniences that cause humbling moments, e.g., those where your unfamiliarity with a new environment causes a problem.  Things we take for granted in our own environments (traffic laws, tipping etiquette, etc.) can lead to awkward situations.

Do you have any travel tips to share?Choose to travel with people with whom you can be yourself.  There’s nothing worse than traveling with people who make you feel uncomfortable being who you are and/or don’t want to do the activities you want to do.  Plan accordingly.

Any parting shots or Shout outs?Get out – there are lots of African Americans who regularly travel – but the perception does not reflect this reality.  My site, Outdoor Afro is unabashedly about getting more African Americans to travel.  It’s important for people to see people who look like them when they travel. 

I’m excited about the future – greater access to technology and resources, there’s less and less of an excuse not to get away.  I’m also a fan of Frank & Audrey Peterman and their travel work.  Not to mention Jay Travels ;o).

What was your favorite destination and why?I have two favorites actually, the first was my trip to South Africa. It was my first experience outside of the US beyond North America. I experienced almost every thinkable emotion – from the pain of Apartheid, the thrill of the amazing views from Table Mountain, the joy of the people in Soweto, seeing a lion in the wild, to talk to a real political prisoner and visit Mandela actual prison cell, and on and on. This was a dream vacation.

The second was my trip to the 2009 NFL Hall of Fame ceremonies in Canton, Ohio. I am a HUGE Kansas City Chiefs fan and one of my favorite players and close personal friend was Derrick Thomas – who passed away in 2000. To see him inducted (posthumously) into the Hall of Fame in person was a thrill. It brought is life full circle.

Has any trip changed the way you think or act – whether politically, socially or otherwise?My trip to South Africa really opened my eyes.  Prior to that trip, I was under the impression from Tv and the news that international travel was somehow dangerous or in some way not as advanced as in the US.  I was worried about getting into some sort of bind with no way to get help.  Fortunately, this is not the case.  Most every comfort that is available here is available in even the poorest countries.

In addition, seeing the effects of Apartheid in person changed my perspective and also made me realize I should have known more.  Not only the fact that these atrocities were going on during my adult lifetime, but that I should have know more – what happened, to whom and why.  Whether the general media reported it appropriately or not, I blame myself for not paying more attention.  You hear the ‘word’ Apartheid – but you don’t know that translated into hangings and Shanty Towns.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten when traveling?Ostridge while in South Africa.

What was your least favorite travel experience and why?Toronto, Canada in January – enough said.  Felt like 28 below zero and snowing.  As Toronto has a big city feel (skyscrapers), the wind just freezes you to your bones as you walk across the corner.

When you’ve traveled internationally, did you prefer to do things that are familiar (American food/activities) or go outside of the tourists areas an see how the natives live?I have done both.  But it is more fun to get away from the standard tourism sites, and venture into the native areas.

What kind of vacation do you prefer, adventure, nature, backpacking, luxury getaways, shopping, relaxing,  other?Not that into pampering and spa things, but I like to shop though. Not necessarily the touristy things.  Sometimes I like to just go out an get lost (not literally) in a destination.

What’s the best thing about traveling?  What’s the Worst?

• Best: Getting out and doing fun stuff.  Just being away from home.
• Worst: How much it costs and what it takes to get there.  Costs is the natural drawback of having a good time.

Do you have any travel tips to share?Not to scare anyone, but be aware of your surroundings.  That’s a good and bad thing – good for the obvious safety reasons, but you’ll likely enjoy your experience more if you can pickup the nuances around you.

Any parting shots or Shout outs?I have a suggestion to change holiday gatherings – whether it be Christmas, Mother’s day, Easter, etc.  Instead of redoing the same turkey dinner, my family and I pick a location from across the globe and fix a dish specific to that country.  You could have each family member bring something from a single culture, e.g., Thailand or each person can bring something from a culture of their choice – like Japanese Sushi appetizers, Argentinean Beef a main course, Italian Gelato for desert.  It gives us a opportunity to learn about other cultures and adds spice to the family gatherings!
